THE TALE OF CLORAN HASTINGS

By Roneatek

STORY

Cloran Hastings is the best sailor in the world. He has mapped the
waters of The Ballad Sea and the Sea of Dirge. He has tamed the
Horned Whale and slain the Leviathan. His fame is well renown.

But Cloran is discontent. He loves the sea, but there is
another he loves much more. Her name is Brandy. Many times has he
thought to marry her, but his life as a sailor would be hard on the
woman. She needs someone who will be there always, and wont be called
to the sea every spring. Cloran has two choices; to let go of Brandy
or forsake the sea. Finaly, after many years of contemplation, he has
made his decision. But abruptly, a letter came for him. It has been
sealed by the king himself and delivered by a royal vassal. The first
line that Cloran read, a loud laugh laughed he. The last line that
Cloran read, a tear blinded his eye. What did the letter say that
could make Cloran Hastings so upset?

-Game Manual-

Thank you for downloading The Tale of Cloran Hastings! Since you
downloaded it to begin with, I think you will like this type of game.
It is not anything you are used to, so let me go over a few things
first:

SHOPS AND EQUIPMENT

The shops are not conventional. In each dungeon, there is a wandering
Dwarven Hermit in a ship. He is a traveling merchant, and will sell you
his latest wares. DO NOT leave the current dungeon until you have found
this merchant and upgraded to the most advanced equipment! Otherwise,
you will die. Cloran's mission is pressed for time and he cannot turn
back, which means that you are not able to return to a dungeon once you
leave. Also, the item shops are unique as well. A mischievous little
pixie named Fae-Fae has taken up the trade of brewing, and you should
find her wandering around trying to sell her brews. She also gets
attached to people very easily, so if she follows you around, don't be
surprised. She will come in very handy, trust me. Also, since your main
character is a ship, you do not EQUIP items. You ATTACH them. Different
types of sails, weapons such as cannons, various planking materials and
lastly, six different sealants, such as Pitch and Tar. Accessories,
such as the Rudder Extension, are special items that cannot be bought.

CURING ITEMS

When sailing, you will encounter various creatures that do not like you
too well, and they will attack you. After the fight, your ship may be
damaged, as well as your crew. You can repair your ship by using the
items Binding Weed, Repair Twine, Silken Cloth and Repair Kit. Some
creatures drop these, and you may even find some in floating barrels
here and there. Now obviously, Repair Twine is not going to help your
crew any. What will? Alcohol! That's right, Ale, Mead, Red Wine, White
Wine and Grog will raise the spirits of any of your crewmembers. You
probably wont find these at sea, but a few creatures might drop some.
Pirates have been known to carry large quantities of Red Wine.

ROUNDS

Your ship, every now and then, will have a special weapon. This weapon
will be different depending on what level you are. The first one you
acquire is called Boulders. You hurl Boulders from your ship at your
enemy. Obviously, your ship cannot hold tons of boulders, so you only
have a certain amount of ROUNDS. When you run out of rounds, you can no
longer use the special weapon. To receive more rounds, you must find
SUPPLIES. The supplies let you make more rounds, and thus you can use
your special weapon again. (This is my version of the magic system, if
you haven't guessed already.)

TACTICS

Every now and then you will become so angry that you just want to ram
the enemy with your ship as hard as you can. So go ahead! But to do so
you need to know the proper sailing TACTIC. Every now and then you will
find a new Tactic. Using a Tactic against an enemy severely hurts them,
but it hurts your ship as well (you can only bash a mermaid so many
times, you know).

FIELD

When you want to travel long distances, you can do so by traveling on
the Field. You will know what the field looks like when you see it. RED
points are simply waypoints you use in order to travel from place to
place. GREEN points are entrances to towns or dungeons. By pressing X
while on a green point, you enter the dungeon/town. Fairly simple
stuff.

THE DWARVEN BROTHERS

Remember these guys from Tsebaoth-The Nurith War? Well, they are back,
and in greater numbers! Some are traveling merchants and others reveal
secrets. I suggest you check anything that looks unusual. Even things
that don't look unusual. And remember, Special Items may sometimes have
another purpose than what you think it is meant for...

Lastly, save often! Whenever you get to the field, save! When you get
to the special blue beacons (you will know they are when you see them)
save! Saving is VERY important. You will probably die at least once.

And a final warning. If you think the game is over, it probably isn't.
